Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) today introduced a precision power operational amplifier (op amp) which operates on supplies up to 100V and delivers a high output current of +/-50mA with a 150mA short circuit limit. The driving force for the OPA454 design was high-voltage test equipment, which requires a combination of high voltage with high DC accuracy and significant speed. Hence, the OPA454 is an attractive option for a wide range of precision op amp applications, including optical communications, industrial control, data acquisition and power supplies and regulators.
The OPA454 is unity-gain stable and can track fast moving signals since it has a slew rate of 10V/us and gain-bandwidth product of 2.5MHz. With a single or dual supply of +/-4V (8V) to +/-50V (100V), the OPA454 offers design flexibility and convenience in a single package, even for routine applications. High DC accuracy of 4mV maximum offset and 5uV/C drift permits precision DC measurement over temperature. The OPA454 also has a low bias current of +/-110pA that allows accurate measurements from high impedance sources or sensitive current shunt circuits.
Additional features include a fast-acting enable/disable pin referenced to the common pin, which can be ground. This feature saves power and provides protection for the amplifier and the load. Also, an output status flag, referenced to the common pin, tells the user when an over-current or thermal overload condition occurs. This allows easy connection to low-voltage logic circuitry.
TI's PowerPAD(TM) technology includes a small exposed metal pad that makes it easy to heatsink over the extended industrial operating temperature range of -40C to 125C. Although designed for high-voltage applications, this general-purpose op amp fits well in systems requiring fixed total supply greater than 36V or variable supplies from +/-5V to +/-50V. The functionality of the device would be complemented through a wide range of signal op amps (OPA735), references (REF50xx), data converters (DAC8811), microcontrollers and standard logic.
Availability and packaging
The OPA454 is available now in a SO-8 PowerPAD package and is priced at $3.45 each in 100-piece quantities (suggested resale pricing). The device will also be available in a HSOP-20 PowerPAD package in 2Q 2008.
