e-con Systems Inc. announces the launch of the world’s first UVC compliant USB 3.0 camera as part of its new See3CAM series. Being UVC compliant means that See3CAM cameras are ‘plug and play’ on Windows and Linux - no additional device driver software is required and the cameras work with standard Windows (DirectShow) and Linux (V4L2) software.
The new simple and cost-effective See3CAM series solves the problem of implementing high resolution, high quality video and image capture in applications such as barcode detection on moving objects and object tracking – these are applications where the cost and complexity of currently available hardware and software has, until now, been prohibitive.
e-con Systems is a leading embedded product design services company specializing in the development of advanced camera solutions and the new See3CAM USB 3.0 SuperSpeed cameras complement its existing range of camera solutions for embedded and USB2.0 platforms. The first product in the See3CAM family is the See3CAM_10CUG, a 1.3 MP global shutter camera. Available in monochrome and color versions, the See3CAM_10CUG works with both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 hosts. The camera’s USB 3.0 SuperSpeed connectivity enables it to capture images at 720p(HD) @60fps and 1280x960(Full Resolution) @45fps. The monochrome version of the See3CAM_10CUG is targeted at entry-level machine vision, 1D/2D barcode detection, object detection/recognition and other high-speed image capture applications. With an external trigger input, the camera can be used in a variety of industrial automation and scientific applications.
“We are excited to launch the See3CAM series of USB 3.0 cameras. We have been working on USB 3.0 UVC stack development for over two years and I am proud of our engineering team’s achievement in launching the world’s first UVC compliant USB 3.0 camera. The See3CAM_10CUG, 1.3 megapixel global shutter camera meets the increasing demand from our customers for a global shutter camera with external trigger suitable for entry-level machine vision applications.
“The See3CAM_10CUG is well suited for industrial applications such as object recognition/tracking on conveyors, 2d/3d barcode detection on moving objects and object classification. We also provide complete customization of the See3CAM series for any CMOS/CCD sensor, mechanical form-factor or interface such as HDMI/DVI/MIPI/DVP. This enables our customers to access e-con’s expertise in SuperSpeed USB 3.0 camera solutions” said Ashok Babu, President, e-con Systems.
The See3CAM_10CUG is based on Aptina’s MT9M031 1/3” optical format sensor. The camera has a CS-mount lens holder and is compatible with C-mount, CS-mount or even S-mount lenses. The camera has an optically isolated external trigger input and external flash LED strobe output.
Building applications with the See3CAM_10CUG is simple - any DirectShow compatible application can use the camera; much like any other UVC compliant webcam. The camera implements DirectShow capture filter pins for both preview/capture and still image capture. Still image capture can be triggered from PC software (user controlled), external switch (user controlled) and an external trigger (external event controlled).
e-con Systems also provides a sample DirectShow application for Windows, however, the camera also works with any third party DirectShow (or V4L2 device in Linux) applications, such as AmCap, Skype, etc. A sample Linux application will be made available in May 2013. The sample camera application demonstrates each of these use cases alongside common camera controls such as preview, auto-exposure and manual exposure control from 128µs to 1.45seconds allowing customers to capture both fast-moving images and meet long exposure requirements.
The Monochrome version of the See3CAM_10CUG is available now on the e-con Systems’ Webstore immediately while the color version will be available in 3Q2013.
