Teledyne Lecroy and Southern Photonics Collaborate to Design 45 GHz Optical Modulation Analyzer

Southern Photonics is a pioneer in offering coherent modulation communication technologies. Teledyne LeCroy, in collaboration with Southern Photonics, plans to go for a demonstration of a new product, 45 GHz Optical Modulation Analyzer at the ECOC Exhibition scheduled to be conducted in Amsterdam RAI, from 17 to 19 September 2012.

Southern Photonics’ coherent optical receiver, IQScope-RT is capable of demodulating single optical input of 16-QAM or DP-QPSK signal into two I-Q electrical signal output pairs with bandwidth up to 45 GHz. LeCroy LabMaster 10 Zi oscilloscope featuring160 GS/s and a bandwidth of up to 65 GHz enables four electrical signal inputs to gain real-time analog-to-digital acquisition. The combination of the two products along with an Optical Modulation Analyzer helps in the post-processing of the input data, making corrections to the chromatic dispersion, apply receiver equalization, perform clock recovery and arrive at numerous measurement parameters and eye and constellation diagrams. The resultant bandwidth of 45 GHz and sample rate of 160 GS/s is helpful in arriving at precise analysis of optical signals.

David Graef, the CTO of Teledyne LeCroy, stated that the 45 GHs analyzer features LeCroy’s LabMaster oscilloscopes that are proven for their real-time bandwidth and sampling rate. Graef is hopeful that the features of the LabMaster 10 Zi oscilloscope combined with the latest technology of Southern Photonics will pave way for a new dimension in the growth of optical transmission technologies.

A USB control cable and four electrical signals remain as an interface to IQScope-RT receiver and the LeCroy oscilloscope. It is also possible to separate the oscilloscope and receiver and this enables the oscilloscope to function either as a part of the Optical Modulation Analyzer or as a single oscilloscope.

Andy Stevens, the COO of Southern Photonics Teledyne, is delighted at his company’s association with LeCroy in launching the IQScope-RT to the commercial market. After the demonstration of the product in the September 2012 ECOC Exhibition, the product is expected to be released in early 2013.
