Minerals Technologies Introduces New Lacam Laser Measurement System for Global Steel Industry

Minerals Technologies has introduced a new Lacam laser measurement system for the global steel industry. This new, fourth generation technology is 17 times faster compared to the earlier version and it provides the most accurate and faster laser scanning for hot spots.

Ferrotron, a unit of Minteq International, developed the Lacam system. Minteq International is a wholly owned affiliate of Minerals Technologies.

The LaCam Laser measurement system promotes non-contact analysis of refractory linings under high-temperature state in metallurgical reaction and transport vessels, including electric arc furnaces, ladles and oxygen converters in the global steel industry. A pulsed laser beam provides a 3D picture of the inner surface of the vessel in a few seconds through rapid scanning and the picture provides information on the residual wear and thickness of refractory lining. The system also defines the steel-bath-level and volume of the vessel.

The LaCam technology is provided as a fixed installed measurement system or as a mobile cart-system. The condensed laser-beam diameter of the new Lacam system allows better detection of small holes, joints and cracks in the refractory surface of steel-casting ladles and converter vessels. The system’s signal-echo digitization, which comes with complete waveform analysis, presents measurements that are less susceptible to dust and smoke, leading to better measuring results in the worst climatic conditions.

Rolf Lamm, Ferrotron’s Global Equipment Director, said that besides improved safety, this technology provides enormous savings in maintenance and refractory costs for a steel producer.
