Positron has announced the utilization of its Attrius PET system at Caring Heart and Brain Imaging, the first cardiac as well as brain PET imaging facility in Manasquan, New Jersey. Now, Caring Heart and Brain Imaging performs Amyvid PET scans to detect the presence of brain plaques related to Alzheimer's disease.
Amyvid (Florbetapir F-18 Injection) is designated for PET imaging of the brain to assess the density of beta-amyloid neuritic plaque in adults with cognitive deficits who are being checked for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) as well as other causes of memory decline. AD is the most common form of dementia, a brain disorder that causes a serious loss of global cognitive ability and affects a person's ability to carry out daily activities. It causes brain cells to degenerate and die, and leads to an irreversible loss of intellectual abilities, including reasoning and memory.
Lorraine Catalano, Caring Heart’s Imaging Director, said that AD can now be identified even before the symptoms occur and early detection can bring on novel programs aimed for treating memory loss. Catalano also added that this alternative can change a life of regular hardship.
Joseph Oliverio, Positron's Chief Technical Officer and Director of PET Clinical Programs, stated that current management strategies and medications for AD improve symptoms temporarily, maintain independence and boost function, and the company’s Attrius PET system could assist with the diagnosis and management of this progressive brain disease.
Anthony Deluca, Caring Heart and Brain Imaging’s Medical Director, said that the company is happy to be the first facility to offer this service in the State of New Jersey and is pleased with the quality of image provided by the Attrius scanner.
