Universal Display, along with Europe’s Fraunhofer IPMS – COMEDD (Center for Organic Materials and Electronic Devices Dresden), recently declared that Universal Display has received an agreement through which it’s proprietary UniversalPHOLED phosphorescent OLED materials will serve as a major component for promoting energy efficiency in the white OLED lighting panels of COMEDD.
This two-year agreement also involves COMEDD’s design and development of white OLED panels with high energy-efficiency for market development.
According to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Universal Display, Steven V. Abramson, as a leading white OLED panel development European research institute, Fraunhofer’s performance at COMEDD will enhance the commercialization of white OLED lighting products. In addition, Universal Display’s all-phosphorescent’ solution will support COMEDD in the development and application of energy-efficient OLED lighting panels. These initiatives will lead to creating a better environment for the U.S., Europe, and worldwide.
OLED lighting is capable of reducing global energy demands as well as minimizing the environmental impacts involved in lighting. Internal quantum efficiency (100 %) can be attained with PHOLED technology and materials. Furthermore, it offers a four-to-one power advantage over other OLED technologies, thereby benefiting energy-efficient white OLED lighting. The development in phosphorescent OLED lighting has made OLEDs efficient enough to comply with general lighting targets established by the U.S. Department of Energy as well as niche lighting performance targets. With flexibility, transparency, and novel form factors, the OLED lighting may facilitate developing a variety of new product concepts.
