ZMDI Introduces High-Efficiency Boost Converter for Driving High-Brightness LEDs

ZMDI, a provider of mixed- and analog-signal solutions for industrial, automotive and medical applications, releases high-efficiency boost converter for driving several high-brightness LEDs in lighting applications requiring low-voltage.

ZLED7015

The features of the boost converter include a broad input range of 6 to 30 VDC, rapid switching frequency of 1.0 MHz, short and open circuit detection that enables protection from high currents, increased efficiency of 95%, is compact and is suitable for low-voltage retrofit lighting. A low-voltage feedback provision enables increasing the operating efficiency and the soft-start function of the device and the open circuit detection feature secures the application circuit and increases the LED life.

The steady, low-voltage current operation makes the ZLED7015 a perfect choice for safety extra-low voltage (SELV) applications with below 24V in moist environments. The device is also a suitable driver for the multifaceted reflector (MR16) lamps, mostly found in retail and residential lighting applications. Other major application areas include replacement tubes, low-voltage retrofit lighting, aftermarket automotive lighting solutions, LED backlighting, low-voltage consumer and industrial applications and also outdoor, signage, building and architectural lighting.

The output current is programmable through external components and features linear and DC voltage dimming and PWM. The ZLED7015 functions with a switching frequency of 1MHz enabling the usage of tinier and economical external components. Power loss is minimized by a low 0.3V feedback voltage in the present setting resistor for better efficiency. The system and the chip function securely with an over-voltage protection inspite of the load not being connected or the output short-circuited.

An in-built soft start circuit considerably minimizes the inrush current at the time of start-up and increases the lifetime of the LEDs. Additional features include an over-temperature and an under-voltage protection and also an over-temperature protection.

The ZLED7015 operates at a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. A full evaluation kit and samples are available. The ZLED7015 is offered in a MSOP-10 package and is compliant with RoHS.
