Solar3D, a developer of innovative three-dimensional solar cell technology for maximizing conversion of sunlight into electricity, has reported results from its test of a novel design of solar cells.
The breakthrough design is expected to provide a conversion efficiency of more than 25%. This efficiency exceeds the conversion efficiency of other cells made from existing solar technology.
Three-dimensional solar cell technology
Solar3D’s President and CEO, Jim Nelson, stated that the company was studying the different ways of manufacturing a model. After fabrication, tests are to be made, and if the test results turn out to be as anticipated by the company, then Solar3D’s three-dimensional solar cell technology will be providing high conversion efficiencies equivalent to those provided by top silicon solar cells, he added.
Solar3D intends to look out for a manufacturing partner, after completing its prototype, for commercializing its three-dimensional solar cell. Large semiconductor manufacturers are likely choices as potential manufacturing partners.
Jim Nelson further stated that test results provided confidence in the path for development of the three-dimensional solar cell. The cell can help change solar power economics as a solar cell that has high efficiency and that can be manufactured using low cost silicon resulting in the lowest cost per watt.
Economic parity between other low-cost power and solar power will occur due to the reduction in manufacturing costs and increase in the conversion efficiency of solar cells. The new Solar3D three-dimensional solar cell technology provides high efficiency, Nelson commented.
