austriamicrosystems Introduces LED Drivers and Support ICs

A semiconductor manufacturer, austriamicrosystems has added three LED drivers and a power supply integrated circuit (IC) to its range of support ICs and LED TV drivers. The company will demonstrate the new devices along with its ambient light sensor, color sensor and proximity detectors for mobile devices, tablets and HDTVs at the FPD International Exhibition & Convention held at Yokohoma, Japan from October 26 to 28, 2011.

The LED driver ICs introduced by austriamicrosystems are the AS3810, AS3823 and the AS3822 which are 16-, 8- and 6-channel LED driver ICs respectively. The AS3823 & AS3822 driver ICs exhibit total compatibility with the 12- and 16-channel LED drivers, which were launched recently, viz., the AS3821 and AS3820. The compatibility of the ICs allows manufacturers to use their existing software and hardware design for the entire range of LED edge-lit television sets. Each driver IC uses austriamicrosystems’ advanced digital power feedback technology to ensure low power consumption. A smart dimming feature also further reduces the power consumption.

The 16-channel LED driver, the AS3810 with inbuilt FETs has been developed for the next generation of ICs for application in direct-lit TVs. With high channel-to-channel performance and optimized power consumption, it can easily combine multiple ICs for achieving various advanced functions such as supporting desired contrast levels, reducing power consumption and for dimmed backlighting.

The AS1390 combination buck converter/ boost controller has been optimized for LED TV backlights and supplies a constant frequency, high power boost controller which has been optimized for a maximum of 90 V/3 A with a combination of a step-down converter of 5 V/100 mA. Additionally, the high-efficiency AS1390 provides transient response and superior bandwidth and has various safety features such as over-temperature, over-current and over-voltage protection.

The senior marketing manager in charge of panel lighting at austriamicrosystems, Markus Luidolt stated that with the complete range of ICs, designers can achieve lowest power consumption in the TVs.
