Microscan Receives 100th U.S. Patent for Dome Light in DPM Handheld Imager

Microscan, a provider of technology for machine vision, automatic identification, precision control, track, trace and data acquisition solutions, has received its milestone 100th patent in the United States.

Microscan had earlier invented and patented two-dimensional symbology, Data Matrix and the industry’s first laser diode barcode scanner. It had received the U.S. patent numbers 4,939,354 and 4,855,581 for the inventions.

The company has been awarded its 100th patent for its novel dome light used in the Mobile Hawk handheld reader. The light enables the reader to provide the superior performance for reading direct part marks.

In many industries the necessity for item-level traceability is increasing. Such industries are adding one-dimensional and two-dimensional barcodes to their products. They are employing direct marking methods including laser, dot-peen and inkjet marking methods.

Microscan’s Mobile Hawk handheld reader has effective lighting technology and when used in combination with the company’s algorithms it is able to read difficult-to-read, reflective and low-contrast marks.

The vice president of engineering at Microscan, Bruce Scharf, stated that the achievement of the 100-patent milestone has not slowed its engineers in the development of technology solutions for complex machine vision, machine vision lighting and barcode applications. He added that the company will continue to focus on developing precise and simple technology for addressing the needs of various industries including electronics, life sciences and packaging.
