US Department of Energy Awards White OLED Lighting Contract to Universal Displays

The US department of Energy has awarded Universal Displays a small business innovation research (SBIR) Phase II contract for designing and building white OLED lighting panels.

OLED Lighting

Through the contract Universal will get a chance to demonstrate the advantages of using phosphorescent organic light emitting device (PHOLED) lighting panels by employing advanced thermal management methods. The Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded the contract based on the success of Universal in Phase I of the program.

During Phase II Universal will be designing and building white OLED lighting panels that cover a large area by incorporating the UniversalPHOLED techniques for efficient energy management. The PHOLED techniques will be combined with innovative thermal management methods for enhancing the performance. It has been observed that the PHOLED technology and the materials used by Universal generate much less heat when compared to other techniques, these techniques when combined with the right thermal management methods is capable of bringing down the overall heat generated by the system. The DOE has been supporting OLED lighting research and development projects since 2003. They are positive that using solid-state lighting techniques will reduce the usage of national electricity by one third of what is being consumed currently, by the year 2030.
