Maxim Integrated Products has launched an offline LED driver, the MAX16841, that offers flicker-free dimming from the highest light intensity down to the lowest or zero intensity with both trailing-edge (transistor) and leading-edge (triac) dimmers.
Continuous frequency control ensures optimal efficiency at both the high-(220VAC to 230VAC) and low- (100VAC to 120VAC) AC line voltages. With a broad 90VAC to 265VAC input range, the MAX16841 can be used universally for the US, Chinese, Japanese, and European dimmer models. It enables continuous replacement of halogen and incandescent lamps, thus removing compatibility problems that normally occur with the previously installed dimmers. The MAX16841 increases the LED lamp life as it can be powered without electrolytic capacitors. Capacitor elimination also ensures space-efficiency and cost-savings. This LED driver is perfect for dimmable, retrofit LED lamps and universal LED bulbs in commercial, industrial, and residential lighting applications.
The MAX16841 can be configured both as non-isolated or buck and isolated or flyback and is appropriate for high -AC line and low-AC line voltages. A constant-frequency control scheme enhances efficiency by utilizing the right conduction mode, either CCM or DCM based on the input voltage. Dimming efficiency is also enhanced as the MAX16841's current-control method does not need current bleeders for the dimmer’s hold current, as the switching regulator ensures a sufficient amount of hold current.
There is no need for different LED drivers to meet global voltage needs ensuring that the MAX16841 minimizes design and inventory costs. It can function without electrolytic capacitors and this extends the lifespan of the LED lamp.
