Analog IC designer and manufacturer, Austriamicrosystems has announced that it has launched the AS1130, dot-matrix LED driver. The unique feature of this LED driver is that it takes up only a small PCB space of 5mm2 and can at the same time drive 132 LEDs.
The AS1130 dot-matrix LED driver is mainly aimed at toys, small LED displays and mobile phones which use dot-matrix displays, household equipment which does not require battery for charging and public information displays. Each of the 132 LEDs that the AS1130 drives does not require an external resistor and has an 8 bit dimming control.
The LED driver uses 12 lines to drive the 132 LEDs through cross-plexing technique from Austriamicrosystems and also comes with an 8 bit analog which enables the adjustment of colours and brightness of each light source and the adjustment of the white balance of RGB LEDs. The cross-plexing technique reduces the need for more connectors and pins and thus saves cost and space. The LED driver can also operate under low voltage as it requires an external power supply when the voltage is high. This ensures a long battery life and enables uninterrupted operation.
The AS1130 helps in saving time, increasing efficiency and reducing the load of the hosts as it has 36 memory frames. This can be used for animation or as an additional storage. The LED driver comes with an SSOP-28 gull wing package. The AS1130 can operate at temperatures of -40 to +85°C and at a power supply of 2.7 to 5.5V.
