Acuity Brands, a provider of energy-saving lighting and control solutions, has declared that lightings from its custom lighting designing and manufacturing division, Winona Lighting, have been used to illuminate the National September 11 Memorial at New York.
The architectural design of the Memorial features twin reflecting pools constructed at the same place where the twin towers stood. The illumination for the pools is provided by 1500 ft of Winline 607 LED submersible lights. The Names Parapet, a short wall around the pools, where the names of about 3,000 victims are recorded, is illuminated with Winlilne 203W surface linear lights. The Memorial has been designed as a part a lasting tribute called “Reflecting Absence” and the dedication was done on September 11, 2011, at a commemoration organized in memory of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 strikes.
The elegantly lit twin reflecting pools, with their beautiful waterfalls, and illuminated Names Parapet, are significant portions of the design and emotional experience of the Memorial. The design of this lighting task was provided to structural illumination design company, Fisher Marantz Stone, New York City in 2005. According to Paul Marantz, the design principal and founder, the project scope was challenging and he initially identified LEDs to be ideal for the project. As the project progressed, Marantz and Winona Lighting started analyzing on the features needed for the challenging application and with design efforts and innovative techniques; they created the Winline 607 LED submersible light.
The victims’ names glitter through the bronze stencil cutouts in the parapet around the pools. The names are enlightened with 314 Winline 203W Surface Linear Wet LED lightings of different sizes, installed within the bronze parapet. These fittings have a very low profile and produces improved light output.
