Ciena, a networking company, has been selected by GlobalNet, a Russian Carrier, for upgrading 40G metro optical networks on the 4200 Advanced Services Platform of Ciena. The platform incorporates Wave Logic coherent optical processors and 40G technology of Ciena.
Presently, GlobalNet provides high-bandwidth connectivity services including media, storage, and content delivery to West Russia with its own optical network spanning over 7000 km. The 40G network of GlobalNet is based on the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform of Ciena. GlobalNet will now extend these advantages to the metro network with the required flexibility, scalability and additional capacity using the 4200 platform of Ciena.
According to GlobalNet’s General Director, Valery Ostapenko, the bandwidth demand in St. Petersburg is increasing with the arrival of cloud-based, media-rich services. He added that GlobalNet can support the growing demand with Ciena’s scalable network infrastructure. Ciena’s Regional Managing Director for Russia, CIS and the Baltic states, Sergei Fishkin, said that GlobalNet provides reliable connectivity to the Russian enterprises with the help of Ciena’s optical network architecture.
It is with Ciena’s coherent technology that GlobalNet transfers four times the information transmitted with the existing 10G network. GlobalNet can support its growing needs for mission-critical applications by upgrading the capacity of its metro network to 1Tb/s.
The 4200 Advanced Services Platform from Ciena can support SONET/SDH, storage, Ethernet, and video services. WaveLogic processors included in this architecture helps to lessen optical impairments in a cost-effective manner.
