Merger Healthcare, a manufacturer of interoperability solutions and enterprise imaging announced that it has completed acquisition of Ophthalmic Imaging Systems (OIS).
Merge Healthcare will include the electronic health record (EHR) platform, practice management system, ophthalmic imaging and informatics solutions, modular imaging devices and digital image management solution to its expanding product line that presently includes image interoperability solutions for cardiology, orthopaedics, surgery and radiology.
The CEO of Merge Healthcare, Jeff Surges, pointed out that the demand for ophthalmic imaging solutions has increased due to factors like early disease recognition, aging population and the increase in the need for portable diagnostic equipment. He added that by acquiring OIS, Merge was equipped to cash in on the growing market demand for EHR related to image intensive specialities. Surges explained that the patients and physicians will experience a more effective and efficient electronic healthcare over a broad range of image-intensive specialities through the new acquisition. Growth opportunities for Merge in image interoperability solutions in the market are bound to increase with the acquisition. It is expected that Merge Healthcare acquiring the OIS for ophthalmic imaging systems is likely to result in increasing its clientele to 1500 hospitals and 4000 practices and clinics.
