An IP-based Interactive network solutions provider for telecom and cable operators, UTStarcom has announced that the company has provided GEPON (Gigabit and Ethernet Passive Optical Network) products to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited for their FTTH (fiber -to-the-home) network deployment. The service was launched in July 2011 in India.
UTStarcom has supplied the broadband technology to the Indian telecommunications company BSNL in the past. The President and CEO of UTStarcom, Jack Lu stated that it was a great honor for the company to provide FTTH support to the Indian market. The GEPON solutions will enable BSNL to provide its customers with triple play services.
The FTTH systems have been installed across 134 Indian cities by BSNL with the aim of providing its FTTH customers with high speed cable TV, voice, video and data services. By 2015, the company targets to provide its services to 6 million customers across India.
High speed connectivity in the FTTH service is supported by a fiber optic ring network. BSNL’s FTTH broadband service can support an uplink of 1.25 Gbit/s and a downlink of 2.56 Gbit/s.
The Chairman and MD of BSNL, R K Upadhyay stated that with the launch of its FTTH services using GEPON- based technology provided by UTStarcom will enable faster transmission of data, voice and video information as well as improve user experience.
