GE’s Innovation in Recording Speed Enables Commercialization of Micro-Holographic Technology

GE Global Research has developed an advanced optical storage technology that enables information recording at the speed of Blu-ray discs. The research team used a micro-holographic material to test the speed at which information is recorded. It was previously established in April 2009 that a micro-holographic storage material offers a storage capacity of 500 GB in a DVD disc.

The Manager at GE Global Research, Peter Lorraine, will explain the innovation at the IEEE’s Joint International Symposium held in Hawaii. The topic of the presentation is Optical Memory & Optical Data Storage Topical Meeting.

The presentation brings together specialists in data storage and optical memory technologies. The company innovation in recording speed and other technical enhancements has enabled micro-holographic technology to be commercialized. GE researchers will help the company to promote its micro-holographic technology in the consumer electronics market. The micro-holographic discs utilizing GE’s material can be used for reading and recording on systems such as a DVD or Blu-ray player.

The hardware and formats provided are comparable to existing optical storage technologies that prospective micro-holographic companies will help clients to play back their DVDs, BDs and CDs.
