The Medical Director of Laser Eye Center of Carolina, Dr. Dean Dornic has carried out a corneal transplant with the help of laser at Raleigh in North California.
This was the first laser-enhanced corneal transplant in the NC area. Corneal transplants restore vision in several people having scarred or diseased corneas.
Nowadays, a large number of corneal transplants are carried out using trephine, a cylindrical metal blade that is utilized for removing the affected cornea. With the help of several small sutures, a healthy donor cornea is sutured in place of the diseased cornea.
Dornic performed corneal transplants and LASIK eye surgery with the help of Abbott Medical’s iFS IntraLase laser which has been approved by the FDA. One important characteristic of iFS IntraLase laser is its capability to cut complicated structures. Dornic utilized this characteristic to develop tongue-in-groove LASIK flaps for safer use in eye surgery. Doctors hope that iFS IntraLase laser will ensure protection while performing corneal transplants and decrease the effect of astigmatism.
According to Dornic, the laser-employed method is a better way to place the graft more accurately in the eyes, thereby reducing the risk of penetration of the graft into the eye that may damage the sensitive parts during surgery , he added.
Dr. Dornic is the only private ophthalmologist who has provided the residents of Raleigh-Durham with his services for performing corneal surgery, cataract procedures, and refractive surgery from 1998. He is only doctor in the area to carry out Intacs, a corneal insert used for treating keratoconus, and IntraLase, a laser LASIK technique.
