Qualcomm Atheros Designs EPON Chip to Improve FTTH Network

The connectivity and networking subsidiary of Qualcomm , Qualcomm Atheros has revealed a 1Gigabit EPON chip solution, the QCA8829, which has been optimized to allow businesses and homes to access advanced optical broadband.

The QCA8829 chip will support multiple standards and help improve the development of fiber to the home (FTTH) network. The chip will support the optical broadband supplied by the North American cable operators, provision for advanced EPON infrastructures worldwide and also facilitate China’s grid application over PON.

Tailored to meet the growing demands of the cable operators, utility providers and telecom carriers, the chip supports IEEE 802.3 ah EPON specification , North American DPoE (DOCSIS Provisioning of Ethernet) 1.0 specification, CTC EPON specification and the China State Grid EPON specification.

The QCA8829 consumes less than 200 mW of power for grid applications when used in the Gigabit Ethernet (GE) PHY sleep mode. The 76 pin package size simplifies system design for plug-and-play applications.

Qualcomm’s Vice President and GM for access business unit, Dr Zheng Liu stated that the simplified design of QCA8829 allows for lower consumption of energy and lower cost in comparison to other devices. Additionally, the capability to support four industry standards will enable customers to develop affordable PON products capable of supporting access services throughout the world.
