Alcatel-Lucent, a network technology company, and China Telecom have signed a new agreement to provide rapid broadband services to about 26 million people in China.
Under the terms of the agreement, the company will assist China Telecom to link several un-served or under-served regions of the nation by installing an advanced fiber optic broadband access network. The expansion project known as the “Broadband China, Fiber Cities” will include the installation of a combination of passive optical networking (PON) technologies linking office buildings, homes and remote nodes.
After the installation, China Telecom will provide several consumer and business services such as video on demand, IPTV, voice over IP (VoIP), and more at 50 Mb/s, with high quality of service (QoS) to subscribers. This project will enable China Telecom to allow 100 million users to utilize its FTTH coverage.
Alcatel-Lucent will deliver its advanced Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) product family, which sustains EPON, GPON and DSL technologies and allows deployment models such as fiber-to-the-node (FTTN), fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-building (FTTB).
Chairman of China Telecom Science & Technology Committee, Wei Leping, stated that the company introduced ‘Broadband China, Fiber Cities’ strategy at the start of 2011, to offer optical network coverage to all the cities within a period of three years. By 2015, the company will provide FTTH coverage to 30 million FTTH subscribers and 100 million households. By combining the enhanced deployment expertise of Alcatel-Lucent for global operators and the advanced broadband access portfolio of Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell will enable urban users to surf the web at the speed of light.
