Mitsubishi Deploys OLED Globe at Tokyo Museum

Mitsubishi Electric has deployed an organic light-emitting display (OLED) globe at Tokyo’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation center.

OLED Globe

The museum will unveil the OLED Geo-Cosmos display globe at a spherical OLED display on June 11, 2011. The globe measures 6 m and hangs at 18 m from the floor. It is enclosed with 10,362 display panels, with each of them measuring 96 x 96 mm.

The OLED globe has been developed to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the museum. Mitsubishi utilized scalable OLED technologies to develop the globe that replaces a globe consisting of light emitting diodes. The globe will showcase scenes of clouds taken using a meteorological satellite. The projections will have a resolution of over 10 million pixels. Three other firms, namely GK Tech, Go and Partners, and Dentsu helped in developing the OLED globe. Dentsu was involved in planning for the development of the project whereas GK Tech was involved in developing the spheroid design of the globe. Go and Partners, on the other hand, developed the globe’s transmission and image processing system.
