Medigus, a developer of endoscopic devices and procedures, and TowerJazz, a specialty foundry leader, have released the second generation of the world’s smallest camera for disposable endoscopic devices.
The device includes TowerJazz's CMOS imager, which provides high sensitivity, versatility and resolution. It can be applied in potential medical applications including bronchoscopy, cardiology, gynecology, gastroenterology, and robotic and orthopedic surgery. The imager measures 0.66x0.66 mm and has a 45K pixel resolution. The TSV (through silicon via) technology packaging reduces the size of the camera and also decreases the cost of high volume production.
The disposable camera is the world’s first video camera featuring a diameter less than 1 mm. It includes bio-compatible components, which enable it to be used in new medical procedures that required small diameter cameras. The disposable feature of the camera also eliminates the need for expensive sterilization processes required for endoscopic procedures.
Medigus will deliver the camera samples for cardiology procedures in the US and Japan.
The disposable endoscopic camera market is expected to increase from 4M units annually to 7M units in 2015.
