Gerber Technology’s business division, Virtek Vision International, has launched a patented laser-guided kitting tool, the LaserKit. The Virtek LaserKit enables workers to assemble precise kits by identifying the right series of plies from the cutting table.
Field tests have established that the LaserKit reduces knitting and cutting duration by 40% and lowers operational error. GKN Aerospace Services Structure’s continuous improvement leader, Ray Lampron stated that the LaserKit has decreased the training period and the software is practical for short run jobs as well.
The LaserKit utilizes a visible laser to guide workers via the correct sequence of picking each and every ply. It also projects the borders and eliminates the risk of errors incurred by picking similar plies manually from the cutting table. An optional printing device is also available. The lightweight device worn on the belt strap automatically prints labels, thus accelerating the process of ply identification. The labels can be fixed to both completed kits or individual plies.
Gerber’s Composites and Automation Solutions’ Executive Director, Todd Rhodes stated that the LaserKit system is an essential tool in eliminating errors and material waste, otherwise caused by placing an incorrect ply in a kit.
