Energy-efficient lighting solutions manufacturer, EverLast Lighting, has announced that the U.S. Air Force has chosen its induction streetlight fixtures for the Eglin Air Force Base located in Valparaiso, Florida.
Eglin wanted to reduce its energy costs and an alternative solution for LED’s. It also wanted to save on maintenance costs.
The Air Force department had earlier released an Engineering Technical Letter (ETL) regarding the usage of LED luminaries in Air Force installations for exterior and interior applications. It pointed out that due to the inconsistent performance claims and slow ROI the LEDs are not permitted for exterior and interior lighting . The ETL permits LED lighting only for low-level lighting applications including step lighting, general signage, exit signs and traffic signals.
The US military has embarked on an initiative to save energy costs. In 2009, around 70 facility managers from Eglin attended a training course for energy audit. The Navy has entered a collaboration for energy-efficient lighting systems with the University of California.
Other US government and military organizations including the U.S. Navy in Pearl Harbor, NASA Johnson Space Center, The U.S. Army at Fort Drum, and USAF in Whitman have chosen EverLast solutions for lighting upgrades.
