BIOLASE Receives U.S. Patent to Apply Laser Technologies for Vision Correction

Manufacturer and distributor of dental laser products, BIOLASE Technology has received a new patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that covers the use of its laser technologies for vision correction.

This is the sixth U.S. patent issued under, ‘Methods for Treating Eye Conditions,’ patent series. At present, the company holds 20 pending and 9 issued International and U.S. patents in the field of ophthalmology.

The patent supports earlier patents and covers the techniques of treating a number of eye problems such as age-related vision loss and Presbyopia. The former generally affects middle-aged individuals, while the latter is marked by a universal reduction in the amplitude of eye accommodation and affects more than 2 billion people globally and more than 100 million Americans.

The latest patent is related to a technique of using colored lights and dyes to make the eye structures more visible for eye surgeries conducted with BIOLASE’s patented laser technologies. Specific colorings enable better energy absorption and make it convenient to cut at minimum energy settings.

BIOLASE Technology’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Federico Pignatelli stated that the company is evaluating several alternatives for its ophthalmology technology and plans to seek FDA approval to perform study trials for presbyopia. The company also has other medical applications in ENT, cosmetic surgery, urology, orthopedics and dermatology and will plan to commercialize in the coming days.

BIOLASE Technology’s Chief Technology Officer, Dmitri Boutoussov stated that the patent provides a broad application in numerous eye treatment surgeries that require light or laser sources.
