3ality Digital Selects Telecast’s Transceivers to Deliver Fiber Connectivity to Australian Sports Events

Telecast Fiber Systems’ advanced camera-mounted transceiver has played a key role in 3D broadcasts of the National Rugby League (NRL) Grand Finals and the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Finals, two major sporting events in Australia.

The CopperHead 3400 systems offered flawless fiber optic connectivity for 3ality Digital’s 3D rigs.

3ality Digital delivered the TS5 handheld dual-camera 3D rigs, which were equipped with the CopperHead 3400 units, to Global Television. The latter offered production services for Nine Network and Channel 7 in Australia.

The CopperHead 3400 transceiver transmitted two high-definition camera signals from the 3D rig's dual Sony HDC-P1 cameras and allowed complete control of the convergence and interocular operations of the 3D rig as well as the Sony cameras back and forth from the truck. The transceiver transported the signals needed for production such as power, audio signals, tally, intercom, gunlock and return HD/SDI to the rig.

3ality Digital’s chief engineer, Matt Battaglia stated that with the help of the CopperHead 3400 transceiver, the company was able to multiplex various signals from its rigs into a dual-fiber hybrid cable. The transceiver enabled the company to accomplish more with less number of cables and fibers, Battaglia said.

Telecast Fiber Systems’ Director of Product Management, Jim Hurwitz stated that the company’s CopperHead 3400 gear showed that fiber optic technology can be utilized to operate complex 3D cameras.
