Halma’s subsidiary and producer of aspheric optics, Volk Optical has recently introduced a surgical system for retinal viewing called the Merlin Surgical System.
It offers high visibility and accurate control of position of non-contact lens during vitreoretinal surgery. The modular Merlin system is compatible with any surgical microscope and features three optional lenses and Volk’s new ROLS reinverter.
The Merlin is fixed below the surgical microscope’s optical pathway and holds a non-contact lens to offer better focus control and precise positioning. Its revolving assembly unit shifts the lens out of the surgical area easily and swiftly when it is not in use. Conventional ROLS reinverters have a permanent prism spot for each microscope, while the ROLS Infinity reinverter enables prism modification according to the optical pathway of each microscope. Volk’s new design accommodates the minute movements required for each microscope as it can configure and fasten the internal prism in accurate position to obtain optimal image quality.
The Merlin’s three optional lenses have different styles to meet specific requirements of individual surgeon such as the wide-field small diameter lens that takes less space in the operational area, the mid-field lens for optimal magnification to the equator, and the widest field visibilities approaching the ora serrata.
Volk’s patented PermaView glass eliminates mineral depositions during frequent steam sterilization and thus maintains the lens clarity.
