Technolas Perfect Vision’s Femtosecond Laser Cataract Procedure Shows Promising Results

Technolas Perfect Vision’s femtosecond laser procedure called the Customlens procedure used in specific stages of cataract surgery is efficient and safe for executing lens fragmentation and anterior capsulotomy.

At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons winter meeting, Dr. Gerd Auffarth commented that the femtosecond laser technology can perform accurate cataract stages with high reproducibility under optical coherence tomography in real time.

A study was conducted in numerous centers to test the feasibility of the femtosecond laser procedure. The Customlens procedure was utilized during the cataract surgery to perform lens fragmentation and anterior capsulotomy on 25 eyes.

Auffarth said that all surgeries were successful and the capsulotomy was done with a high degree of precision, resulting in enhanced overlap and IOL positioning. In Lens fragmentation, the femtosecond laser reduced the last phaco energy needed to take out the lens, he added.

At present, the Customlens software is offered on the Technolas femtosecond workstation and commercial availability of the software is slated for 2011 end.
