High-Speed Fiber Optic Submarine Cable Links Cuba, Jamaica and Venezuela

Telecommuniciones Gran Caribe (TGC), a joint venture between Venezuelan and Cuban telecom companies, has deployed a 1,840 km, ultra-speed fiber optic submarine cable connecting Cuba, Jamaica and Venezuela.

The cable covers a distance of 234 km from Jamaica to Cuba and offers high-quality data transfer through ultra-powered laser signals.

TGC is formed to fund and control the international telecommunications system ALBA 1. The project will provide economical and quicker access to internet and all kinds of telecommunications technologies to Cuba, which has access to telecommunications through satellites.

The TGC cable has LIME as its strategic partner in Jamaica. Christopher Dehring, the Chief Executive Officer at TGC, stated that the company is happy about its efforts to enhance the fiber optic competence in the Caribbean. He further said that LIME has successfully managed the $35 million East to West cable connection project that linked Jamaica to the British Virgin Islands and Dominican Republic.

Waldo Reboredoarroyo, Vice President at TGC, commented that the project was completed well ahead of schedule. With additional devices, the cables might offer speeds of up to 642 Gb/s , An underwater provision has been put in place to extend the cabling to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, he added.
