Provider of energy-saving lighting and control products, Acuity Brands has declared that the Austin City Council has chosen its ROAM remote monitoring system for the city’s street lighting enhancement project.
The ROAM monitoring system features a photo-control technology coupled with wireless monitoring and managing functionalities. The project is expected to be completed in 2014. Once the project gets over, Austin city will be able to control nearly 70,000 streetlights with a simple click of the mouse. The City can save its maintenance and power expenditures of over $1,000,000 per year through this complete outdoor lighting solution that was launched in August 2010. Austin region’s utility company, Austin Energy will install and operate the ROAM system.
In the first phase of the project, ROAM wireless controllers will be deployed on 3,300 streetlights by summer. Austin Energy will observe and manage the streetlights by utilizing the data obtained from the ROAM through an internet-based communication system. For instance, the ROAM will send alerts about the exact places where streetlights are still burning during the daytime to the utility companies so that technicians can be deployed quickly to attend such issues.
While observing the critical attributes of the electric distribution system, the ROAM offers comprehensive energy usage and tracking by collecting electrical data. Its asset management functionalities enable data about individual streetlight to be bar-coded into portable communication systems. Thus, technicians can bring the exact spare parts required, reducing repairing time and enhancing efficiency.
