Ciena, Mobily to Install the First 100 G Optical Network in Middle East

Mobile operator, Mobily, and the network company, Ciena will install the first commercial 100 Gbps optical fiber network in Riyadh. The network deployment in the Middle East region is an expansion of Mobily’s scalable and adaptable nationwide fiber network.

Mobily has selected Ciena’s Carrier Ethernet solutions, optical switching and transport platforms, and maintenance and management services to support services that require high-bandwidth. The new 100 G coherent service is provided on the ActivFlex 6500 Packet-Optical Platform from Ciena. This service is the first commercial platform that integrates coherent 100 G optics.

The 100 G capabilities offered by Mobily will enable the provider to include network capacity conveniently and quickly in the metropolitan region. The 100 G coherent technology will deliver an overall throughput of 8.8 Tb of data per second on the network of Mobily, which is transferred across 88 optical channels through an optical fiber.
