Alcatel-Lucent, Kazakhtelecom Demonstrate 100 Gbps Optical Connection in Kazakhstan

Alcatel-Lucent and Kazakhtelecom announced that they have demonstrated a 100 Gbps optical connection between Taldykurgan and Almaty, Kazakhstan. The field trial exhibited 100 Gbps connectivity across an active DWDM link.

The trial utilized Alcatel-Lucent’s 1626 Light Manager, which is improved with 100 G coherent technology by using the 1830 Photonic Service Switch. According to Alcatel-Lucent, the field trial, in addition to expanding the network capacity, also showed that Kazakhtelecom could decrease maintenance and operating expenditures and reduce power consumption.

Kazakhtelecom’s Managing Director of Technical Development, Z.A. Zhamanbalanov stated that the demonstration showed that 100 G live traffic is possible across the company’s current optical network and provides a substantial step to meet future and current bandwidth demands with decreased time-to-market. The field trial also showed that 100 G technologies could scale the company’s fiber links to the multi-terabit capacity, which is required to handle the increased traffic growth.
