Edison International to Buy Energy from First Solar’s Proposed Solar Plant

Manufacturer of thin-film photovoltaic panels, First Solar announced that California-based firm, Edison International plans to purchase about three-quarters of the energy from a 340 MW solar plant located in Nevada.

The First Solar’s Silver State South solar plant will comprise of solar panels positioned on 2,500 acres near Nevada.

The solar plant would start its operation by 2014 and will an output of up to 250 MW of AC by 2017. The plant will connect Edison’s new Eldorado-Ivanpah 220 kV transmission line.

The solar plant will dwarf the Silver State North plant of First Solar and will provide power to NV Energy, a Nevada utility, for 25 years.

According to a spokesman at First Solar, Southern California Edison would buy 250 MW of power in the next 20 years. However, the California Public Utilities Commission has to give its approval for the contract.
