Cuba to Get High-Speed Fiber Optic Internet

Alcatel-Lucent, a French company, has installed a 1,000-mile plus fiber optic cable in Cuba. Ramon Linares, Deputy Minister of Informatics and Telecommunications, stated that the optical cable would connect Cuba with Venezuela.

Linares remarked that the optical cable deployment will be completed once the cable installation on the ocean floor gets over. Alcatel-Lucent began the construction of the fiber optic cable on 22 January 2011. The cable is scheduled to go on line by July this year.

According to the Cuban government, the fiber optic network would provide high-speed internet and telecommunications capability to the country. The speed is expected to be 3,000 times faster than the current technology.
