Roswell officials are requesting lawmakers to provide $150,000 to install solar powered light poles in the city.
The solar installation, if approved by the lawmakers, would become the first solar light poles to be owned and operated in Roswell.
Dusty Huckabee, the City Councilor, stated that currently there is only one street light operating in each four or five blocks in the city. Many street lights have either stopped functioning or have been shot out, Huckabee said.
Mayor Del Jurney remarked that the solar lighting project is significant as it could aid in controlling crime.
Michael Vickers, the City Planner, stated that each light pole can cost $5,000 to maintain, operate and install. He added that the project would offer significant cost savings to the city.
