Sony to Acquire LCD Display Facility from Seiko Epson

Sony has announced that will acquire Seiko Epson’s Chinese subsidiary, a company specializing in the manufacture of small and medium-sized TFT LCD panels. Japan-based electronic component manufacturer, Seiko Epson intends to sell Suzhou Epson to Sony by September 2011.

Sony has previously acquired a portion of the small LCD display business in Japan from Seiko Epson. The Suzhou plant handles the downstream process, while the Seiko facility handles the upstream production process.

A spokeswoman from Sony stated that for certain major solutions in smartphone and other segments, the company must possess the capability to manufacture the display products without subcontracting the part of the process. She added that the acquisition would aid in distinguishing Sony’s displays.
