Virgin Media to Provide Fiber-Optic Network to London's Grid for Learning

Virgin Media announced that it has inked a contract with London's Grid for Learning to supply a fiber-optic network. The company will develop the network to link more than one million pupils, over 2,500 schools and 33 London boroughs with speeds ranging between 10 Mbps.

The fiber-optic network and the framework purchase contract will form a vital part of a public service network and will fulfill the government’s objective to utilize the present infrastructure in a better manner. Primary schools, located in London, will obtain access to 10 Mbps links at a cost-efficient price from April 2011. High schools will also obtain access for a 1 Gbps broadband link during the same period.

Virgin Media’s Managing Director of the Business Unit, Mark Heraghty stated that the company’s fiber-optic network offers customers with broadband and data capabilities. Heraghty added that at present, the company has s186,000 km of fiber across the United Kingdom and serves numerous municipalities.
