Samsung Electronics Acquires Display Technology Company, Liquavista

Digital convergence technology company, Samsung Electronics has acquired Liquavista, a Netherlands-based display technology company. Liquavista provides electrowetting, which is a new electronic display technology for applications in mobile devices such as media players, mobile phones and e-readers.

The electrowetting technology functions in transflective, transparent, reflective and transmissive modes. In addition, it allows the development of energy-efficient display products with colorful and bright images. The displays that incorporate the electrowetting technology consume 10% battery power compared to current display technologies and produce over double the transmittance of LCD technology. In addition, the displays function at minimal frequencies.

The acquisition will allow Samsung to expand its product line of advanced display technologies advacing the use of electrowetting in transparent and e-Paper displays. The company will be able to achieve major synergies by using current production equipment and skills because electrowetting can be produced by altering the current LCD production lines. The electrowetting displays would be suitable for future applications in transflective, transmissive and transparent displays.
