BAE Demonstrates Distraction Laser Device that Prevents Pirate Attacks

BAE Systems announced that it has demonstrated a non-lethal, distraction laser unit that prevents pirate attacks on maritime ships. The laser device was developed by the Optics and Laser Technology Department of BAE Systems as part of the Advanced Technology Center.

BAE Systems stated that the laser device provides visual warning to pirates present at distances of more than 2 km. The laser unit was subjected to day and night testing at a Worcester facility. Cameras were positioned at the specific location to showcase the beam intensity level and the divergence caused by the test runs.

BAE commented that the laser unit was developed by researchers who succeeded in developing a neodymium yttrium aluminum garnet laser. The researchers used changing beam patterns and targeting patterns to make the distraction effect more pronounced.

BAE Systems’ Capability Technology Lead, Roy Evans mentioned that the company successfully demonstrated the functioning of the laser unit in daylight and at night. However, the laser device would have to meet more requirements to be placed on commercial ships.
