BT to Deploy Fibre-Optic Broadband in Six Rural Communities

UK telecom giant, BT announced that it will deploy fibre-optic broadband network in six rural communities throughout the UK by 2012.

The company organized a competition called the Race to Infinity, inviting communities to present a case for their respective regions for broadband installation.

According to the results of the competition, Whitchurch in Hampshire, Innerleithen on the Scottish Borders, Madingley and Caxton in Cambridgeshire, Blewbury in Oxfordshire and Baschurch in Shropshire received the maximum votes. BT Openreach will conduct a survey on the regions to plan and analyze the fibre installation.

During the competition, BT received more than 360,000 votes from various parts of the country. The company plans to conduct a technical trial of broadband speeds of 1Gbps in Kesgrave Suffolk. In addition, BT is adding a maximum of 40 rural market towns to its next stage of high-speed optical broadband installation.
