Lextar to Begin Mass Production of 6-Inch LED Epitaxial Wafers in Mid 2011

Lextar Electronics, a subsidiary of AU Optronics, announced that it has manufactured a new 6” LED epitaxial wafer. The company stated that it overcame numerous problems such as cracking and warping during the manufacturing procedure by utilizing sophisticated devices with grinding and focus-exposure technologies.

Lextar, however added that optimizing the manufacturing process for production purposes would take some time. The company expects to begin mass production of the LED wafers by the second half of 2011.

David Su, Chairman of Lextar commented that the company would establish a 6-inch manufacturing facility by 2011 end. He remarked that numerous LED manufacturers in Japan and Europe have started to utilize 6” production facilities. The company’s MOCVD devices will increase from the present 50 sets to 80 sets by 2010 end.

Epistar, another Taiwan-based LED manufacturer, is expected to implement 6” LED wafers for its production process from mid-2011. Industry experts however stated that the LED production on 6” wafers might not be cost-efficient.
