Western Massachusetts Electric (WMECO) has unveiled new lighting enhancement projects for Springfield. Key intersections under Interstate 91 as well as at Stearns Square region in the downtown entertainment district will get the lighting upgrades.
A part of the Northeast Utilities system, WMECO serves about 200,000 consumers in 59 communities across Western Massachusetts. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and representatives at WMECO made the announcement regarding the lighting improvements. Few of the improvements include, a test of LED bulbs; a research project for testing the viability of deploying new street light photocell monitors; and an under lighting upgrade across the Interstate 91corridor in downtown and the South End.
The Chief Operating Officer and President at WMECO, Peter J. Clarke stated that Springfield specified numerous lighting issues to the company. He added that the company is delighted to coordinate with Springfield to determine economical and innovative solutions.
WMECO’s Spokeswoman, Sandra Ahearn remarked that Stearns Square will receive LED bulbs and photocell monitors as part of the lighting project. Ahearn continued that 53 photocell monitors are being positioned in test locations across Springfield.
