Etisalat, Global Telecom Firms to Deploy Fiber-Optic Submarine Cable Between Europe and India

Etisalat, a UAE-based telecom company, has inked an agreement with eight Indian telecom companies to roll out a new fiber-optic submarine cable from India to Europe.

Etisalat stated that the 13,000-km fiber-optic cable, known as IMEWE, will connect India to France and Italy through the Middle East, with landings in Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Pakistan.

The fiber-optic cable features a design capability of 3.84 terabits per second. The IMEWE association consists of nine key telecom firms, namely Tata Communications, Telecom Italia Sparkle, Telecom Egypt, Saudi Telecom Company, Pakistan Telecommunication Company, OGERO, France Telecom-Orange, Etisalat, and Bharti Airtel.

The Executive VP of Etisalat Carrier and Wholesale Services, Ali Amiri commented that the additional capacity offered by the IMEWE fiber-optic cable would offer enhanced benefits for users across the region. The fiber-optic cable will play a crucial role in meeting the increased bandwidth needs of the Middle East region and the Indian sub-continent.
