OSRAM Introduces OSTAR Compact LED for Projection Applications

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors announced that it has introduced a new compact LED that features low thermal resistance and high-current capability to generate more light output. The OSTAR Compact LED can handle a maximum of 6 A in pulsed mode, making it suitable for pocket and pico projectors for compact mobile terminals.

The OSTAR Compact LED is housed in a 3.9x3.6 mm package and allows compact projectors to be developed with improved brightness without enhancing their size. The unit can be pulsed to 6 A and attains 165 lm in blue, 600 lm in green and 350 lm in amber in pulsed mode. The thermal resistance of the device has been decreased to 3 K/W, enabling effective heat dissipation.

The OSTAR Compact LED features a 2 mm² chip that enables it to achieve improved performance. The 2 mm² chip gains from improved power distribution and enhanced epitaxial processes.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ Marketing Manager, Wolfgang Schnabel stated that the OSTAR Compact LED provides high luminous power for small projector designs. He added that the unit delivers enhanced brightness with its sophisticated thermal management design.
