New Chip Technology Eliminates Optical Cable Length Limitations

VIA Labs, supplier of USB 3.0 IC controllers, and DisplayLink, a chip company, have collaborated to develop a new chip technology. The technology would eliminate the limitations of optical cable length for graphics over USB, and extend the USB virtual graphics system.

Both companies will demonstrate the chip system at the International CES show from 6 to 9 January, 2011. The companies will show VIA Labs’ technologies with DisplayLink technology to connect multiple zero clients to a host computer installed with Windows MultiPoint Server 2010, across active optical cables.

The chip solution will show the capability of long distances by utilizing optical cables. In addition, the chip technology enables every client to utilize the USB 2.0 bandwidth of 480Mb/s and offers security to connections. VIA Labs will exhibit the zero client system linked to a 100 m spool of fiber optic cable.
