Vishay Introduces VCNL4000 Proximity and Ambient Light Optical Sensor

Discrete semiconductor manufacturer, Vishay Intertechnology has rolled out a new ambient and proximity light optical sensor that delivers 120 and 100 Hz flicker noise rejection.

The VCNL4000 combines a 16-bit ADC, signal processing IC, ambient light detector, PIN photo diode, and an IR emitter into a 3.95 x 3.95 x 0.75 mm surface-mount package.

The VCNL4000 saves power for mobile devices including digital cameras, GPS units, PDAs, touch phones, and smart phones by serving as a proximity sensor in touch screen locking. The optical sensor performs an ambient light function for keypad/display dimming and contrast control.

The light optical sensor supports an I2C bus communication interface and reduces designs in various industrial and consumer applications. In addition, the VCNL4000 removes the necessity for optical alignment of the photo diode and IR emitter; and light barriers. The device has an integrated ambient light PIN photo diode that provides a dynamic range of 16 bits for ambient light detection of 0.33 lux-22 klux. Furthermore, the VCNL4000 has a programmable LED drive current of 10-200 mA, enabling maximum distances of 200 mm.
