UK researchers have developed a new high-power laser that clears clogged arteries in short time duration. The new procedure could minimize hospital stays and operation time.
The technique involves the connection of a special tube or catheter to the Excimer laser. The Excimer destroys tissues into small microscopic particles, and the laser technique triggers healing response and finally renarrowing the artery.
Experiments conducted at University College Hospital in London showed that the laser procedure minimized operating times, while quickening the recovery time of patients. After the treatment in July, the first two patients were discharged in a single day, reducing the duration of hospital stays.
