PLDT Expends Fiber-Optic Network in Philippines

Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) has announced that it has completed a $63.6-million domestic fiber-optic network expansion project. The expansion project was started in January 2010.

During the expansion project, the company installed fresh submarine and terrestrial fiber-optic cables 1,300 km covering  the Bicol region, south of Manila and the southern and central regions of Mindanao and Visayas.

The project extends the network coverage in 10 states, which include Negros Oriental and Iloilo. These states represent prospective development regions for the business process outsourcing market.

Head of marketing group and Senior Vice President of PLDT, Eric Alberto commented that the project has extended the company’s fiber-optic network to 10,050 km linking 68 nodes. The expansion has increased the network bandwidth capacity to a total of 1.56 TB. The expanded network can smanage 24 million voice calls concurrently, he concluded.
