Siemens Industry Automation & Drive Technologies announced that it has manufactured new optical link modules (OLM) that are ideal for Profibus networks. Each OLM G22 and OLM P22 modules has two optical Profibus interfaces that utilize the bayonet fiber optic connector (BFOC) technology.
The modules also use two electrical interfaces of sub-D type. These interfaces allow two individual electronic Profibus segments to be combined into an optical network structure.
The OLM G22 module is suitable for glass fiber-optic cables, while the OLM P22 unit supports plastic fiber-optic cable. Both OLMs feature a signal contact that monitors the optical signal quality.
The Profibus OLMs allow the development of optical Profibus networks by utilizing redundant, star and line ring structures. The fiber-optic link’s transmission rate for up to 3 km is about 12 Megabaud/s. The OLM units protect the transition between optical and electrical network types and permit the development of hybrid structures.
